cleaning a mattress

Many people don’t know how to care for their mattress and often damage it by using the wrong cleaning methods. Common mistakes in mattress cleaning are written below.

What should you avoid when cleaning your mattress?

Avoid getting your mattress wet.

When a mattress is dirty, many people tend to wash mattress covers with soap and water to remove stains. Many mattress manufacturers caution against cleaning a mattress with water, as moisture can damage mattress pads.

Cleaning with a whisk.

For generations, people have known that a mattress contains a lot of dust and bugs. So in the old days, it was common for our parents and grandparents to clean the mattress by pounding and basting it in the sun. In some countries or households where mattresses are light and there is plenty of room for thought, this practice may still be observed.

Contrary to a traditional opinion about mattress cleaning, tapping the mattress is not an effective method of removing dust particles. On the contrary, this household practice can be a dangerous method, capable of causing allergic reactions in those who inhale the dust and dust mites that fly into the air when tapping the mattress. Instead of permanently removing dirt and dust particles from the mattress, tapping simply blows germs and dirt particles into the air, and while the mattress is in the sun, some dirt particles settle back into the mattress or other parts of the house.

A weekly wash of the bedding and mattress cover is enough

Since the bedding and mattress cover that covers the mattress are washed regularly as part of the household, it is not surprising that owners think their mattress is clean and see no need to thoroughly clean the mattress if it is not dirty. Contrary to popular belief, a mattress is like a giant sponge that accumulates large amounts of dirt particles such as dust, dead skin flakes, millions of dust mites, and other microorganisms. These dirt particles linger in the mattress and make it the dirtiest place.

In fact, these invisible particles and microorganisms can cause more problems with mattress hygiene than stains on a mattress. Allergy sufferers who are sensitive to dust and dust mites may wake up with a runny nose, sneezing, or itchy eyes if they sleep on a dirty mattress. These are common symptoms that can lead to rhinitis, asthma, and eczema. Even healthy people should avoid sleeping on a dirty mattress because breathing in dirt particles and germs on a mattress at night definitely does not bode well for their health.

Use any type of vacuum cleaner for cleaning

There are many types of vacuum cleaners designed to clean mattresses and even kill dust mites. There are cheap models, but there are also expensive ones. Some are large and heavy, while other devices are small and light, like a toy. But promise to perform many functions.

Multi-purpose vacuum cleaners on the market are designed to perform multiple cleaning tasks, i.e., vacuuming the floor, ceiling, couch, etc. Unlike professional mattress cleaning systems, a multi-purpose vacuum cleaner is not designed or manufactured specifically for one main function. Therefore, a multi-purpose vacuum cleaner can satisfactorily handle general cleaning of floors, upholstered furniture, and blankets. But it is not enough to thoroughly clean dust, dirt particles, and micro-organisms deep inside a thick mattress.

Steam cleaning is dry cleaning

Steam cleaners are a good tool for removing grease and stubborn stains from hard surfaces. Such as tiles in toilets, kitchens, outdoor floors, etc. To add more features to this device, steam cleaners are marketed as a disinfectant. That kills bacteria due to the high temperature of steam.

While steam cleaners can definitely kill bacteria on any surface that is exposed to steam. It is not recommended to use steam to kill bacteria on upholstered fabric furniture such as mattresses and fabric sofas. Because the moisture from the steam can promote mold and fungus in the foam upholstery. As many mattress manufacturers warn, cleaning a mattress with steam can damage the mattress and affect sleeping comfort.
